ISO-RIG Replacement

Background:

ISO-NE is responsible for managing electricity demand and ensuring a stable supply in New England .  Every generation facility that puts power on the grid must have a remote intelligence gateway (RIG) system for receiving and sending data to ISO-NE.  ISO-NE has mandated that by February 2010 all existing RIGs must be updated.  They left it up to each plant to devise their own solution.  The  specifications are that the RIG communicates to ISO-NE using the DNP3.0 subset level 2 over TCP/IP protocol and use the existing 56K frame relay circuits.  This specification greatly cuts down on the number of RTU or software solutions available for this application.

Fitch Solution:

Our solution uses WonderWare InTouch for the front end and Triangle Microworks’ Scada Data Gateway software to communicate to ISO-NE.  All the necessary scripting is done in the InTouch system, so only a PC is necessary. Other OPC servers can be used to obtain the data ISO-NE requires such as MW, MVar, Voltage, Breaker Status, and AVR status from the existing PLC or DCS systems.

HMI applications that have an OPC client are able to connect to the Scada Data Gateway software.  Therefore if a customer has a different HMI standard, a new project for this application can be created with minimal effort.  The Fitch Company solution utilized is very open and easy to change.  This is contrary to other black box solutions.  ISO-NE is pleased with the solution in place.  Feel free to contact them directly for a reference.
